2.4 Chapter 2 Summary and Review

Key Concepts

  1. The longest side in a triangle is opposite the largest angle, and the shortest side is opposite the smallest angle
  2. Triangle Inequality: In any triangle, the sum of the lengths of any two sides is greater than the length of the third side.
  3. Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle with hypotenuse c ,     a 2 + b 2 = c 2 .
  4. If the sides of a triangle satisfy the relationship a 2 + b 2 = c 2 , then the triangle is a right triangle.
  5. By using similar triangles, we can find the unknown sides of a right triangle if we know only one side and one of the acute angles.
  6. The trigonometric ratio of an angle θ is the same for every right triangle containing the angle.
  7. If we know one of the sides of a right triangle and any one of the other four parts, we can use trigonometry to find all the other unknown parts.
  8. If we know one of the trigonometric ratios of an acute angle, we can find the angle using the inverse trig key on a calculator.
  9. The exact values of trigonometric ratios of the special angles are useful benchmarks.

    30 1 2 3 2 1 3
    45 1 2 1 2 1
    60 3 2 1 2 3
  10. You can remember the trig values for the special angles if you memorize two triangles:

    triangle
  11. For the trigonometric ratios of most angles, your calculator gives approximations, not exact values.

Chapter 2 Review Problems

For Problems 1–6, explain why the description of A B C is impossible.

A < B < C , and B = 93

If C > 93 , then A + B + C > 180

A < B < C , and C = 58

a < b < c , and C = 58

If A < B < 58 , then A + B + C < 180

The figure illustrates a proof of the Pythagorean theorem given by Euclid. It shows that the area of the square on the hypotenuse A B is the sum of the areas of the squares on legs B C and A C . We first draw a line segment from point C perpendicular to the hypotenuse A B to meet the far side of the square on the hypotenuse. This segment meets A B at G and the opposite side of the square at D .
